  • Member of the Governing Body for the Institute of Local Governance
    Date | 2010 to 2014

    The Institute for Local Governance (ILG) is a pioneering research and knowledge exchange venture designed to maximise the benefits of collaboration between all five universities in North East England and the wider public realm.  We are a unique research partnership between all the North East local authorities, universities, police forces, fire and rescue services and other public sector partners and we are hosted at Durham University.  We are also building our links with the private and civic sector.

  • Member of the Regional Committee of Lord Taveners (Northumberland & Durham) 
    Date | 2010 to date 

    The Lords Taveners has the overall mission to enhance the prospects of disadvantaged and disabled young people using cricket and other forms of sport and recreation to engage with them. We envisage a future where all young people, irrespective of background and ability, have the everyday opportunity to play cricket and enjoy other sports and physical activities to the benefit of their self-esteem, health, education and future socio-economic potential.

  • Member of the Regional Council of SEMTA
    Date | 2009 to 2014 

    SEMTA is the Sector Skills Council for the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sectors. We address the sectors’ skills needs, providing expert support to improve performance and growth. We do this by working with employers, partners and training providers to shape skills and training solutions that meet employers' needs. Semta is responsible for 132,000 companies and 1.7 million-strong workforce that make up UK advanced manufacturing and engineering: Aerospace and Defence, Automotive, Marine, Metals and Electronics. In 2014 SEMTA withdrew from regional councils and focussed on its national programme.

    MAS (Manufacturing Advisory Service) is funded by BIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills). We provide manufacturing business support for companies based in England, helping them to improve and grow. MAS is designed to help you, the manufacturer, streamline your processes, reduce waste, become more energy efficient and generally improve and grow your business.

  • Founding Member of the Board of the North East Productivity Alliance (NEPA)
    Date | 2001 to 2009 

    NEPA was created way to assist in improving overall productivity levels in the region. It has gained a credible reputation amongst leading players in manufacturing and was a unique service offer in the UK.

  • Founding Member of the Board, and Trustee, of the Biosystems Informatics Institute (BII) 
    Date | 2000 to 2008

    Bii's initial activities are very much focused on data integration from disparate proteomics technologies and increasingly systems biology. The Institute will build upon expertise located at the Universities of Durham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside.
